This is a special edition of Horror from the Crypt of Fear which collects Richard Corben’s very first graphic novel done for an obscure fanzine, Weirdom Illustrated, in 1969. Corben was 28 years old and still working at Calvin Productions when he began working on “The Plague” in 1968. Dennis Cunningham was one of the first publishers to use Corben’s art in the comic book industry.
During the late sixties and early seventies Cunningham published a series of fanzines titled Weirdom Illustrated. It was here in number 13, the “Special Plague Issue” that Corben’s first graphic novel saw print. It didn’t take long before Richard Corben was recognized as one of the top artists in the country.
This story was subsequently published as an underground comic in 1971, and in 1986 Corben created a new cover painting for Bill Leach’s magazine-sized edition. In 1989 it was translated into Spanish and published in the Richard Corben, Obras Completas series, titled Manuscritos de la Plaga.
This new edition returns to the very first digest-sized version, with 12 pages of vintage wood-engravings that were dropped from later printings,. The publisher has brought back the original first cover that has not been used except for the first edition, which has now been masterfully colored by Deanna of the Dead artist William Skaar.
Other than the publisher himself, we are the exclusive source for this new edition. This includes a history of the four previous versions by the publisher.
